What is Drip Irrigation?
The crops at Club Paradise Palawan’s Taranuman Farm have been thriving since we implemented the drip irrigation system, an efficient water and nutrient delivery system for growing crops. By delivering water and nutrients directly to the plant’s root zone, in the right amounts, at the right time, each plant gets exactly what it needs, when it needs it, while saving on water, fertilizers, as well as energy.
Drip irrigation distributes water through a system of tubing, pipes, valves and emitters. Once you have this system in place, you can expect a better growing conditions for your plants and production of higher yields.
Benefits of using Drip Irrigation
Adaptability. The system works on any type of soil.
Environmental benefits. There is less chance of erosion because of the small amount of runoff that end up in streams and rivers.
Improves plant health condition. When you’re able to control water distribution optimally, plants can achieve steady growth because they don’t have to go through the unnecessary stress created by lack of water.
Time-saving and cost effective.There is no need to manually water the plants using a hose or setting and moving of sprinklers. A timer can be installed to the system for automatic watering.
Reduced waste. A drip irrigation system uses less water than traditional overhead sprinklers, where an estimation of at least 70% of water ends up in the soil, while the rest is lost due to evaporation and wind. With drip irrigation system allowing water to trickle to the plant’s root zone directly, smaller amounts of water are lost to evaporation.
Reduced risk of disease. Drip irrigation system keeps the foliage dry. This reduces diseases that occur in damp conditions. It also helps control fungal diseases that grow under moist conditions.
Discourages weeds. Germination of weed seeds are limited because the drip irrigation system distributes water directly to the plant root zone leaving weed seeds out.
